A Guide to Getting Ready for Your Engagement Photoshoot

Weddings

One of the most exciting times of your life is your engagement. You either asked the most important question of your life or answered the question, and are beginning to plan your futures together.

Many couples look forward to booking their engagement session, and are typically nervous to be in front of the camera. Alot of my clients have never had couples pictures taken until their engagement session, so rest assured you are not alone in your nervousness. As as wedding and engagement photographer, it is my job to prepare you and alleviate any nervousness leading up to your session. In this blog, I will give you a few suggestions for you to consider leading to your engagement session.

Your engagement photos capture the love, excitement, and anticipation of this special chapter in your life. To ensure that your pictures reflect the true essence of your relationship, proper preparation is key. From choosing the right outfits to selecting the perfect location, here’s a comprehensive guide on how to prepare for your engagement pictures.

  1. Choose the Right Outfits:
    • Coordinate, Don’t Match: Opt for outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Choose a color palette that suits both of your styles.
    • Consider the Season and Location: Dress appropriately for the season and the location of the photoshoot. Light fabrics for summer and layered looks for fall can enhance the visual appeal.
  2. Grooming and Beauty:
    • Hair and Makeup Trial: Schedule a hair and makeup trial before the photoshoot to ensure you’re comfortable with your chosen look.
    • Time Your Grooming: Plan haircuts, grooming, and any beauty treatments a few days before the photoshoot to allow for any redness or adjustments.
  3. Choose the Right Photographer:
    • Research and Select: Look for a photographer whose style aligns with your vision. Check their portfolio, reviews, and make sure you feel comfortable with them capturing your special moments. One key note is to ensure you love their editing style. Photographers are artists and each one edits according to their artistic eye.
  4. Select a Meaningful Location:
    • Personalize Your Photos: Choose a location that holds significance for both of you. It could be where you first met, your favorite date spot, or simply a place that reflects your personalities. If you love Halloween, bring your favorite costumes and wear them! If you love your cowboy and cowgirl boots, wear them!
  5. Plan Your Time:
    • Golden Hour Magic: Schedule your photoshoot during the golden hour – the hour after sunrise or before sunset when the lighting is soft and warm.
    • Allow Buffer Time: Plan for extra time in case of unexpected delays, and take weather into consideration. Each photographer has a different level of comfort shooting is various weather conditions so be sure to ask AND be flexible. Being rushed can impact the overall experience and the quality of the photos.
  6. Bring Props and Accessories:
    • Personalize with Props: Incorporate props that showcase your personalities – be it a favorite book, a picnic setup, or anything that holds sentimental value.
    • Accessories Matter: Pay attention to accessories that complement your outfits and enhance the visual appeal of the photos.
  7. Relax and Have Fun:
    • Be Yourselves: The best photos capture genuine moments. Relax, be yourselves, and enjoy the experience.
    • Trust Your Photographer: Trust your photographer’s expertise. They know how to capture the essence of your relationship and create beautiful memories.
  8. Review and Communicate:
    • Discuss Expectations: Communicate openly with your photographer about your expectations, preferred poses, and any specific shots you have in mind. Sending a pinterest board is very helpful!
    • Review Photoshoot Details: Double-check the date, time, and location details with your photographer a few days before the shoot to avoid any last-minute hiccups.
