Family Session at The Jefferson Memorial | Amanda Richardson Photography

Washington D.C. is a city steeped in history, where every monument tells a story of the nation’s past. On a recent cloudy and windy day, I had the privilege of capturing the Ferryman family’s special moments against the iconic backdrop of the Jefferson Memorial and Lincoln Memorial.

As I arrived at the memorial, the wind whipped through the trees surrounding the Tidal Basin, creating a dramatic atmosphere. The cloudy sky diffused the sunlight which is perfect for capturing timeless family portraits. A cloudy day is ideal for outdoor portraits because the sun is not harsh and no one has squinty faces during your session.

The Ferryman family, clad in coordinating outfits that complemented the memorial’s marble architecture, arrived with smiles that lit up the overcast day. There was an air of anticipation and excitement as we began our session. We began their session at The Reflecting Pool and Lincoln Memorial. Even though there was construction, we had great views and the best time.

After we photographed all they wanted at the Lincoln Memorial, we walked over to The Jefferson Memorial.

The Jefferson Memorial itself is a marvel to behold. It’s classical design and imposing stature reflect the ideals of liberty and enlightenment that Jefferson championed. Against this backdrop, each photograph captured the Ferryman family’s bond—a testament to their own journey through life’s triumphs and challenges. Military families are resilient and this family is beginning a new chapter in their lives by moving to Oklahoma. They are very excited and embracing this new chapter of life and career changes within their military careers.

Despite the weather, the atmosphere was warm and familial. We laughed as the wind tousled hair and Lia’s dress, embracing the spontaneity it brought to the session. Occasionally, the clouds would break, allowing brief moments of sunlight to filter through and illuminate the scene, adding a touch of magic to their session. This session was important to them to document their time living in the District. There is no better way to end this chapter of their lives with a photo session.

Throughout the session, I encouraged the Ferryman family to interact naturally, capturing candid moments that truly reflected their personalities and relationships. Mrs. Ferryman’s gentle gaze towards her children, Mr. Ferryman’s proud smile as he looked at his family—these are the moments that make family sessions like this one so meaningful.

As the session drew to a close, we took a moment to admire the memorial once more. The wind continued to rustle through the trees, and the waters of the Tidal Basin lapped gently against the shore. The Jefferson Memorial stood tall and steadfast, a timeless symbol of America’s history and ideals.

Reflecting on the day, I couldn’t help but think about the significance of family and heritage. Just as Thomas Jefferson’s legacy endures through the memorial, so too does the Ferryman family’s story unfold in moments captured on camera—a testament to their own journey through life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.

In the end, the Ferryman family session at the Jefferson Memorial wasn’t just about photographs—it was about capturing a moment in time, celebrating family connections, and honoring the beauty of history and nature intertwined on a cloudy and windy day in Washington DC
